On Finding Optimal Polytrees

چکیده
Inferring probabilistic networks from data is a notoriously difficult task. Under various goodness-of-fit measures, finding an optimal network NP-hard, even if restricted to polytrees of bounded in-degree. Polynomial-time algorithms are known only for rare special cases, perhaps most notably branchings, that is, in which the in-degree every node at one. Here, we study complexity polytree can be turned into branching by deleting some number arcs or nodes, treated as parameter. We show problem solved via matroid intersection formulation polynomial time deleted constant. The order bound depends on this constant, hence algorithm does not establish fixed-parameter tractability when parameterized arcs. version allows and scales well with contrast positive result showing parameterize somewhat more powerful parameter, tractable, subject complexity-theoretic assumption.

On Finding Optimal Polytrees
We study the NP-hard problem of finding a directed acyclic graph (DAG) on a given set of nodes so as to maximize a given scoring function. The problem models the task of inferring a probabilistic network from data, which has been studied extensively in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Several variants of the problem, where the output DAG is constrained in several ways...
متن کاملLearning Polytrees
We consider the task of learning the maximumlikelihood polytree from data. Our first result is a performance guarantee establishing that the optimal branching (or Chow-Liu tree), which can be computed very easily, constitutes a good approximation to the best polytree. We then show that it is not possible to do very much better, since the learning problem is NP-hard even to approximately solve w...
متن کاملLearning Ancestral Polytrees
Causal polytrees are singly connected causal models and they are frequently applied in practice. However, in various applications, many variables remain unobserved and causal polytrees cannot be applied without explicitly including unobserved variables. Our study thus proposes the ancestral polytree model, a novel combination of ancestral graphs and singly connected graphs. Ancestral graphs can...
متن کاملOn Finding Optimal Discretizations for Two Attributes
We show that nding optimal discretization of instances of decision tables with two attributes with real values and binary decisions is computationally hard. This is done by abstracting the problem in such a way that it regards partitioning points in the plane into regions, subject to certain minimality restrictions, and proving them to be NP-hard. We also propose a new method to nd optimal disc...

We show that if there exists a strongly polynomial time algorithm that nds a basis which is optimal for both the primal and the dual problems given an optimal solution for one of the problems then there exists a strongly polyno mial algorithm for the general linear programming problem On other hand we give a strongly polynomial time algorithm that nds such a basis given any pair of optimal solu...
